Amerindian Epistemology and Sacred Plants: Artistic Expression, Persecution and Revival
Luis Eduardo Luna, Ph.D., Dr. H.C.
Luis Eduardo Luna will give two interrelated lectures. The first one will address Amerindian pre-Columbian knowledge of food, medicine and sacred plants, and their extraordinary expertise in land use. Then he will share numerous examples of Amerindian artistic expression of inner states related to shamanism, the epistemological clash with the European invaders from 1492, the persecution of sacred plants and indigenous religious beliefs, and finally their current revival.
The second lecture will focus on ayahuasca with an overview of the botany, the pharmacology, the ethnography and the phenomenology of the ayahuasca experience. There will be a discussion on the current global interest in ayahuasca as a religious sacrament, as a therapeutic and a cognitive tool. Finally, Luis will present the work of several artists who have been greatly inspired by ayahuasca and other sacred plants.
